Recruitment
A Day in the Life of a Trainee

Zoé Spinks Zoé Spinks is a first year trainee at Rollits in Hull.

Zoé's current seat is in Company & Commercial.

Below, she gives us her account of what it's like to be a trainee at Rollits, along with her description of a typical day in the life at work!

After what seems like a very fast six months, I have now commenced my second seat at Rollits and am based in the Company and Commercial Department.

Rollits have a busy Company team and I have been fortunate to be able to be involved in some big projects. The Commercial Group also has a lot of interesting work going on at the moment, of which I hope to become involved with.

On a typical day I will arrive at work at about 8 am. Once I have read any emails and prioritised what needs to be done, I can make a good start on the day’s tasks. There will often be other tasks that crop up during the day, so it is important to keep your work under review to make sure everything is done within the right timeframes. I am usually able to leave around 5.30 pm, however completion meetings do tend to run late, so I expect that there will be a few all-nighters!

So far, my work in the Company and Commercial Department has been predominantly of a corporate nature. This involves setting up new companies and keeping company books, completing Companies House documentation, dealing with and drafting agreements.

Rollits have an open door policy throughout the firm and actively encourage staff to talk to one another about their cases, making it easier and far less intimidating to ask for help on matters that you might be unsure about. Trainees are also encouraged to have weekly update meetings with their supervisor so that they can discuss their workload. This also gives the opportunity to express an interest in any particular area of law that you might be interested in.

The firm is also very involved in arranging outside events for employees and clients alike, of which the Trainees are actively encouraged to participate and help with.
